presentation of Jisuk

Jisuk Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea and is currently living in Tokyo, Japan. Somewhere in the middle of all that, Jisuk went to the School of Visual Arts in NYC and managed to pry a BFA in Animation out of the chairman's trembling, reluctant hands.

3: Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often? Shichi doesn’t exercise intentionally. He does a lot of physical work, especially when he was at the temple. The most stationary time of his life was probably at Urameshiya, and even then he was still cleaning, gardening, and helping in the restaurant. Now, he’s traveling again, which means he’s on his feet 90% of the time. The closest thing he does to intentional exercise would be occasional yoga (not much since he left the temple, though).

5: Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.) He’s incredibly organized and clean. Though it’s part of his personality, it’s also necessary to being a doctor. It’s no good to tend wounds or illnesses in an unclean environment. Also, he deals with a great number of herbs and materials that must be kept in order. Not to mention Sagiri is the one who trained him and she has zero tolerance for sloppiness.

6: Eating habits and sample daily menu. Though he enjoys food and appreciates a well-cooked meal, he often forgets to eat. His stomach is fairly low on his list of priorities and it seems that those around him must often remind (or force) him to eat. He’s a vegetarian (shojin ryori) and is used to eating simple, modest meals.

Kurohane Temple Sample Menu (with recipes — sorry some are in Japanese)

Steamed rice (with umeboshi) [no recipe because yeah]
- Tsukemono (assorted pickled vegetables)

Rice and tsukemono are served with every meal below!

Breakfast

Wakame Miso soup (seaweed miso)
Goma Tofu (sesame tofu)
Mushinasu (steamed eggplant with ginger)

Lunch

None, only two meals per day are served at the temple.

Dinner

Kenchinjiru (vegetable soup)
Miso Kabocha (pumpkin with miso)
Hijiki Salad (seaweed, carrots, and edamame)

Note: While monks in certain countries/sects eat one meal a day or nothing before noon, tengu monks have their own regulations. Also after leaving the temple he just eats whenever he remembers to.

12: Favorite book genre? Shichi likes reading all kinds of books. Most commonly he reads books on medicine and herbs, but he also enjoys stories, historical tales, and spiritual texts.

Ugggh I’m really annoyed at the Simpsons right now and I have to just type this out and get it off my chest and delete it later.

The newest episode is about CBG (Comic Book Guy) getting a Japanese girlfriend. When I read the summary I was like, okay, this sounds awful but it’s the Simpsons I’ll give them a chance. Also it had the Ghibli tribute scene that’s been going around Tumblr which was pretty neat.

The girl, Kumiko, has no personality or purpose other than being in love with CBG. She instantly falls for him for some vague reason (“I think you have great soul.”) and proceeds to hang out with him in kawaii outfits and and get married to him in a kimono. The whole episode enforces tired, shitty stereotypes about Japanese people (with Chinese culture added in too since who can tell the difference they’re all the same thing right?). There’s suicide jokes left and right. And that song she sang as a fairy? thing in a pink schoolgirl outfit was one of the most cringe-worthy things I’ve ever seen.

No matter how mean, awful, and unhygenic you are, there is a beautiful young Japanese girl in a mini skirt just dying to meet her perfect white husbando — ie: you.

fffffuuuuucckkkkkkkkk

Chiyo (c) Jisuk Cho

Waahhh! I really love this, you draw Chiyo so amazingly cute! Thank you so much! Though, I’m curious, why did you tag it as azumanga-daioh?

For those that don’t know, Japanese consider the first dream of the new year important (hatsuyume). Dreaming of Mt. Fuji, a hawk, or eggplant is considered lucky (or all three is really lucky!).

randomtengureporter :
"Honored Sagiri?" We dun need no stinkin' literary barriers! There are /questions/ to be asked! "What are your thoughts on privacy? What would you say is your biggest regret? Do you have a favorite indulgence, and what are your general thoughts on indulgence as a whole? Any favorite books or stories?"

Reponse:

Sorry, Sagiri is not the best person to interview as she’s terribly curt. I’ll expand on her first person answers a bit for you.

————-

34: Thoughts on privacy? (Are they a private person, or are they prone to ‘TMI’?) “Though working in harmony with others is of utmost importance, every person is entitled to their share of privacy.”

(Basically, Sagiri is an incredibly private person. Since her master’s death, Shichi is probably the only person she is close to and she rarely tells him anything about herself. Her inner thoughts and feelings are often (as unhealthy as it may be) locked tightly away.)

27: What is their biggest regret? “Like I said, every person is entitled to their share of privacy.”

(Sorry, she would not openly answer this question! She regrets not reaching her village in time to save it, and her family. In addition, she regrets never making amends with her father before his death.)

8: Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging. “I’m afraid a monastic life and ‘indulgences’ do not go hand in hand.”

(Again, she’s not being open. Her indulgences are simple things like occasional sweets or when Shichi prepares her favorite tea (gyokuro). But now that he’s gone, nobody makes it for her anymore.)

12: Favorite book genre? “I am not terribly fond of stories or folktales, though I do enjoy reading books on medicinal study and combat theory. My most-read piece, however, would be the Lotus Sutra.”

(Don’t worry, she’s got nothing to hide here!)

4: What would they do if they needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy? She doesn’t see how this would be a problem, as that person is probably cooking for her. If they’re not, she’ll ask/coerce them to.

18: Favorite beverage? Sake! Kitsune love sake and Chiyo is no exception.

20: Childhood illnesses? Any interesting stories behind them? At this point, nothing out of the ordinary.

47: How do they express love? By being mean/teasing. Though she is capable of being sweet in a romantic relationship, we haven’t really seen that side of her yet.

48: If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like? She has no training when it comes to fighting and just relies on her brute size and strength (in monster form). In her human form she’s stronger than an average human, but would lose against a trained fighter (like Aki). She would be more the type to punch and grapple — the closest thing would be something like judo.
