— Videogame Heroines ABC Round 2 —

Raj is the player (the avatar of the actual player) of “Greater than Life”, as revealed in the mid-game twist.

Presenting itself as a single-player arena shooter with advanced IA, the game has actually a strong narrative background and focus. The player starts the game by creating his avatar in the shooter component and starts playing matches against increasingly tough foes, choosing each time how to finish his adversaries, strongly evoking gladiator fights.
How he dispatches his opponents is recorded and eventually presented to him as part of a “replay show”, as it is revealed he is actually playing as Raj, a contestant of the meta “Greater than Life” game.

GTL, in the narrative context, is actually a violent battle-royale where the (not always willing) players are pitted against each other, and their virtual cruelty used as a rite of passage, a means to select who can access “adulthood”.


The player can actually be merciful in each of his encounters and choose not to finish off his opponents, as the game sought to be a commentary of violence in media. Unfortunately, many did not see beyond the apparent facade of virtual brutality the game set up, and has since been the subjet of many debates.

— Videogame Heroines ABC Round 2 —

Qirin is the explorer of the fortress of Ecdysis, from the game sharing this name. An exploration/platforming FPS, the main focus is on environment traversal, and the feeling of weight of the movements for each jump, grab, climb, wall jump and more.

The game is centered around the quest of Qirin for the source of the curse of lycanthropy, of which she is afflicted - she has a couple of days left to find the secret in the heart of the castle, and choose how to take hold of her future. To that end, she can either reject her new powers for as long as she can, and develop new traversal tools, or revel in her growing surnatural force and use the castle itself as a means of transportation, by liquefiying through cracks, passing through walls and more.
As times pass, the structure of the fortress crumbles progressively, rendering passageways inaccessible and creating others, making the maze like structure dynamic and the exploration always about discovery instead of backtracking.

Po is the lead spokesperson, guide, elder and all around helper in the management simulation game “Adventure Time”. The goal of this fun take on management is to help a fairy village from the land of Avadyon prosper as adventurers come and go, pass through, rest, buy supplies or equipment, and hire compagnons.

To that end, you’ll set prices, determine optimal shop and inn placement, and try not to spread too close to the dungeon entrance… if monsters spread into the village, you’ll need to rely on the goodwill of those same adventures, who might not take kindly to those exorbitant prices you  thought funny to set for buying potions.

— Videogame Heroines ABC Round 2 —

O is for Odoun, the ornithologist from “The Big Story”, an exploration game set in an undefined south american forest.

Odoun is tasked with charting and recording local wildlife, but in the process discovers a digging site for the construction of a luxurious mega-city. Using her audio recording apparatuses and cam-glasses, Odoun must record the events unraveling in the jungle, all the while having to survive on limited and local supplies after her campsite is destroyed. The game is a mix of open world exploration with survival elements (several gauges for hunger, thirst, exhaustion, most notably),
and infiltration section where detection is prohibited, the game lacking any form of combat system.

Under the guise of fantasy, it’s actually a very political game with a strong stance on deforestation. Though the story doesn’t end with a significant victory, the endgame suggests that the player’s imput is critical in making the rest of the story happen, which can be interpreted in several ways - one of which may concern the hinted at sequel, stuck in development limbo for years, leading fans to the wildest  speculations as to the reasons why.

— Videogame Heroines ABC Round 2 —

Noelle is the last cursed daughter of the unfortunate Dragonhim, the shape shifting dragon folk from “Veil of Tears” burdened with watching over a humanity that fears and hates them.

The game is very narrative driven, as we control Noelle through the different important steps of her life. Each period used different, fully developed gameplay mechanics, making the game quite hard to describe : it goes from busy open world town exploration to flying arcade shooting to real-time strategy management depending on the beats of the story. As such, the development cost was huge and the game barely met its needs by selling over 2 million units over 4 years.
A sequel has been hinted at thanks to popular and critical success, even though the first episode ends with the tragic bittersweet fate of Noelle, but the economic realities of today make such a project very difficult to go forward with.

— Videogame Heroines ABC Round 2 —

M is for Mathilde, the heroine from “Deep Down Dive”, the underwater exploration game.

Taking cues from exploration platformers, the game is set in a giant and seamless environment the player can completely navigate, using the full possibilities of a 3D environment to discover secret and hidden passageways. Lacking a HUD or classical elements such as a map completion counter, it was a very contemplative experience, and the game was criticized for lacking “action or engaging gameplay mechanics”, although it had a map larger than other exploration platformers recorded to date.

A later extension added the possibility and secondary goal to record the different underwater species encountered, turning the exploration fantasy into a more “gamey” collect-them-all, but this received more critical acclaim. As such, the game is planned to turn into a series with a heavier emphasis  on visual “gameplay” cues, collection objectives, and progression-based exploration mechanics closer to metroidvanias.
