“Master, Shichi inquired as he finished sanitizing the first of his acupuncture needles, “do you have a moment to spare?” He had tried to keep his tone level and casual, but his excitement bled through readily for anyone familiar with his voice.

Sagiri glanced up from her tea slowly. “Our duties are done for the day… If you have finished chopping the firewood.” Her student’s nod was answered with one of her own. “Very well. What is it?”

“I heard, earlier today, about an attack on the Western Temple,” he started cautiously. “The elders made vague mention of you playing an important role in the battle, but they refused to elaborate. Would you…” The Karasu’s face heated up as he realized that there really wasn’t any proper way for him to request his master to tell him a story, as though he were some fledgling.

Fortunately, Sagiri showed the male a degree of mercy in the form of a tired sigh. “You wish to hear the tale?” Seeing another nod, her grip on her teacup tightened slightly. “There is no glory in battle, Shichi… Know that before the story even begins.”

“Of course, Master.”

“I can see your excitement… Fine. You will learn. It was many winters ago, long before you were an egg…”

Does anyone else ever get so excited when you get something that you can’t even read it, or look at it, and you have to go do something else? Like you need a moment to accept that it exists and then savor the anticipation?
