    That summer I spent most of my days with Daddy. He’d drive me into the city all the time so we could go shopping or whatever I felt like doing. Some days he’d take me out fishing, doing all the gross fish and worm related parts for me. One time on a fishing trip it was so hot out and I started complaining about it, so Daddy just pushed me off the dock, just like that. Then he stripped off all his clothes and jumped in with me. He pulled my shirt off over my head, saying I probably didn’t want that nasty lake water on my clothes, and I took off the rest and tossed them right on top of his nice dry ones. We swam up under the dock, where there was just enough room for our heads above the water. I was shivering and he held me close to him. Everything was perfect, but then I had this terrible thought.  Please don’t let me get hard. Luckily the cold water helped me with that, but was that weird that it had even occurred to me?

    It started to get cloudy, so we headed home. By the time we got there it was raining, so we got dry clothes on and settled in to watch a movie. We were sitting next to each other on the couch and he pulled my head down in his lap. I stayed there, with him running his fingers through my hair. At one point I scooted back to get a little closer to him, and I noticed it. He had a hard-on. I didn’t really know what to do- if I was supposed to move away or just pretend I didn’t notice. Just then I heard Mom come in the front door, and we both moved away from each other really fast. Like we had been doing something wrong. He put a pillow over his lap. She sat between us and we watched the rest of the movie together.

    A few days later, Mom was out somewhere for the day. Daddy and I were just sitting together in the living room having a beer and a soda and flipping through magazines, nice and lazy. It was pretty quiet. “The other day” he said, taking a big pause “The day when it rained really hard and we were watching that movie…” “It’s okay, Daddy.” I was staring down at my empty glass like it was really fascinating. He continued “I just…didn’t want you to feel like-“ “Do you need another one? I want some more.” I cut in. He just shook his head. I came back and put my glass on the table, trying not to spill. My hands were shaking. I don’t know what made me do it, but I sat down in his lap. I was facing him with my legs dangling off the sides of the chair. I put my face against his neck and he just held me there for a long time. Our awkward conversation was over.

    After a few minutes he turned his face toward me a little and rested his forehead on mine. We were so close I was breathing in the air he exhaled. “Daddy?” I said. “Yeah?” he kind of whispered. I didn’t know what to say. I just stood up, unbuttoned my pants, and stepped out of them. He took off my shirt like he had at the lake and then he undressed too, and sat down on the floor. I got back in his lap. He kissed me. “You ready, baby?” I nodded yes. “Take a deep breath, okay?” I did, but then I gasped when he first pushed into me. “You okay?” I think I said yes, very quietly. He rocked me back and forth. Tears ran down my face and I kept trying to breathe really slow. “That’s good, baby. We don’t need to go all the way in just yet.” He kissed me again, running his tongue over my lips, and I came on his belly and chest, kind of on mine too. He kept rocking me for a while and then he squeezed me really tight and he was done. He came with me to the bathroom and cleaned me up with a warm washcloth, kissing me a bunch while we got dressed again. Neither one of us said a word for a while, til we heard her car pull up.
