I was disappointed with that too, but I think they can apprehend her later on. Remember Krillin has a high spiritual potential and in canonical anime he demonstrated that he can use Genki Dama's energy when Goku passed the sphere of power to him, he is never trained with Lord Kaioh of the North.

Okay, they couldn't master the Gankidama, but what if two or three try to control it? It could be interesting, two characters collecting the energy (and faster {and stronger?} than just one) while the others fight.

So I'm guessing Gohan never made it in time that's a pity

Why is King Kai freaking out? Goku was able to traverse Snake Way in a few hours after training with King Kai. Are you Saiyan that these 4 (not counting Chiaotzu) are that much weaker than Goku in canon after training with King Kai that they'd have trouble making it back with 2 whole days at their disposal?
