I have two questions I'm curious about, will we see more Youkai appear as the story progresses and do Youkai actually possess supernatural abilities in this universe, or are they simply the product of human myths?.

Reponse:

Yes, absolutely! Okay, well, let me explain.

I’ve kind of stripped tengu of all their magical amazingness for some reason… I guess because I wanted to make his life full of suffering more relatable. In myth, they can fucking fly around and do magic and, I don’t know, possess people and make marvelous gusts of wind. I even took away his wings! The first image of Shichi had wings, but when I drew him again I just totally robbed him of all magnificence. When I look at bird skeletons, their wings are basically our arms. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me for something to have wings and arms. I figured, through evolution, their wings would have become arms as they sacrificed the ability to fly in exchange for dextrous thumbs and higher intelligence. GOD my science is just wrecking this potentially wondrous story, isn’t it?

Anyway there’s a point to all this. Yes, the magic is coming. You may or may not remember Chiyo, who I drew earlier. She is a kitsune, and is magic as fuck. She can change her shape (between human and fox), take over people’s bodies, and eat so much food. You seriously won’t believe how much she can eat. And she is coming up in the story pretty soon! There will also be other yokai, though I’m still trying to decide exactly which (leaning towards an oni girl now).

Anyway, hope that answered your question! Actually, I hope that wasn’t too long of an answer…

So. I thought it would be fun to fully draw out several of the outfits Shichi wears throughout the story.

Work: The style of clothing he typically wore in the first 10 parts of the story, usually while working, training, or gathering herbs. Simple and easy to move around in, with mon (crests) on the top. While doing manual labor, he ties the sleeves up with tasuki. Otherwise, his sleeves are loose. The hakama (pants) allows comfortable movement during his work.

Ceremony: The clothing worn during ceremonies, meditation, and other monk business. This is the only outfit with tabi (socks), since tengu claws would probably wreck tabi if worn regularly. He has juzu (counting beads) on his wrist for meditation.

Travel: This is the outfit he will be wearing from Part 11 to, well, pretty much the rest of the story. The ropes keep a small satchel on his back, which contains some supplies and medical tools. He also wears Kana’s ribbon openly on his wrist, rather than concealed. His legs are partially wrapped in an effort to keep off burrs and other forest inconveniences. He also carries the shakujo (walking staff) that Sagiri trained him to use.

Medical: A very simple outfit used during medical practice. Shorter sleeves give keep his arms free and the white robe prevents his other clothing from being stained with blood (and other unpleasant byproducts of healing).

I had also sketched a yamabushi outfit, since it’s the clothing that tengu are most typically presented in, but it just… I… the hat was killing me. That’s all I have to say.

黒羽寺 (Kurohane-dera, Blackwing Temple)

Finished the crest for the temple! Eh, kind of a bit late since it doesn’t exist anymore. OTL Well, it will live on forever on that one robe that Shichi has left…

[[A thought occurred to me... Most birds have some sort of dance or display to attract a mate; do Karasu have any corresponding courting behaviors?]]

Reponse:

The only dancing done in tengu culture is in festivals or performances, but male tengu do sing to females when they’re trying to court them. It’s a good thing too since Shichi probably can’t dance to save his life. He’s actually only average at singing, too, so it’s probably for the best that he became a monk.

Sometimes males sing traditional love songs, but the really suave ones write their own. Men that totally suck at singing will instead offer gifts (the shinier the better). The only times Shichi ‘sings’ is while chanting or singing songs for young children.

Is FIshbones available anywhere in print? I know you had it as a download for a while, but I seem to be having difficulty finding it.

Reponse:

No, Fishbones has never been printed. I heard that self publishing hurts your chances of ‘publisher’ publishing and since I’ve given up my efforts on finding an agent because I’m horrible at writing summaries (does anyone want to write a query letter for me?), that means it will probably never be in print. That said, you can still find the file here!
