Probablemente la primera vez que hubo una copia mecanizada de un personaje empezó aquí, con esta película, que superó a gran mayoría de las anteriores para conmemorar el 20º aniversario de Godzilla.
Empieza con Godzilla atacando Japón sin razón. Anguirus intenta razonar con él pero Godzilla le parte la mandíbula, cosa extraña...¿No eran amigos? Despues otro Godzilla aparece, y este destruye la piel del otro, revelando ser Mechagodzilla.
Mechagodzilla vence a Godzilla, y los humanos llaman a otro monstruo para que les ayude, King Caesar, que también es derrotado. Pero no antes de que Godzilla vuelva y junto con Caesar derrote a Mechagodzilla.
