Giving a mood is sometimes better, especially for dark stories :-) You're right, sometimes authors mistake "cover" and "trailer" . The cover is not the place where you give spoilers. But at the same time, should not be too abstract... and must be attractive, appealing enough so the reader will think "oh yeah that's seems to be cool I want to open the book/click next" .
